Cat Behavior Questions
** Skin Condition ** Unspayed Cats As Mothers ** Indiscriminate Urination
Skin Condition
- Q My cat frequently has skin problems. Do you think it’s emotional?
- A It’s possible that the problem started from emotional stress which triggered the skin disorder. There are a number of various stress factors including declawing, boredom, frustration, lack of attention, improper diet, reaching sexual maturity un-neutered, and low self esteem. Have your cat’s skin problems treated by a veterinarian, and if medicine and change of diet (diagnostic tests if necessary) don’t solve the problem, consult a behavioral therapist. An anti-anxiety drug may be needed to relieve your cat’s anxiety.
Unspayed Cats As Mothers
- Q I allowed my female cat to have one litter because I was told this was the best thing to do before I had her spayed. It took her several months to return to her old self? What do you make of this?
- A Motherhood is not a necessity for cats. The world is full of unwanted and abandoned kittens –not to mention the pregnant, abandoned females. Many times the female cats endure such an exceptional amount of emotional and physical stress during the course of motherhood that it does affect their catsonality adversely. It’s much easier to adopt a companion for your cat, rather than to create one. The only way you can be sure that all your cat’s kittens will be properly provided for is to keep them yourself. However, this is not the most practical solution, and your female cat may not welcome this arrangement.
Indiscriminate Urination
- Q Why do you think my one-year-old unspayed female is urinating outside her box?
- A A sexually mature female often forgets her toilet training, especially when she’s in heat, and will not use her litter box to urinate or defecate. Soon after she’s spayed and her hormones are lowered, she will return to using her litter box. It’s unlikely that an unspayed or intact female is more predisposed to urinary problems.
