Q.  The other evening I came home in an agitated mood. After I hurriedly paced back and forth, I sat myself down with a thud. Shortly after, my cat Jessie ran over and nipped my ankle. His m.o. is usually good natured and loving. What caused him to be so aggressive?

A.  Jessie was jolted by your agitation.  He mirrored your agitation. It bounced off of him, and his nip on your ankle was the result. His behavior was a perfect demonstration of cause and effect. A cat is very in tune to people’s body language and mood.  The next time you might do your anxiety work-out in another room, privately, and let Jessie greet you when you’re feeling yourself.

Q.  I recently took in a young male kitten from the street. Although he’s very shy, he has made some overtures towards me. Any suggestions on how to make him feel at home with me?

A.  It’s best that he seeks you out.  Until he’s more secure, let him be the initiator. When he comes for contact, stroke him gently, softly, and stop before he bolts.  If he climbs into your lap, relax, and don’t hang on to him. He must feel that he’s free to move around at will. After you’ve reinforced this type of interaction, he’ll begin to feel comfortable and confident. It will take time and repetition. Good luck with your new kitten.

Q.  Last week I brought my cat Tulip home from the vet, and my other cat Barnaby hissed at her and avoided her for the next few days.  How can I prevent such behavior in the future?

A.  The next time you take either of your cats home from the vet, rub the other with a towel from inside the carrier, so the cat who stayed at home will pick up the alien scent of the hospital and won’t be threatened.  Tulip smelled like many, many cats to Barnaby and not like his own Tulip. Butter or yeast flakes can be sprinkled on the ex-patient if your cat’s a butter or yeast fan. The at home cat will become so caught up with licking the butter that anxiety will be forgotten.
