Sexuality In Neutered Cats

Aries, a neutered male, mounts Bronzie his neutered companion, and his guardians are concerned and puzzled

Neutered Aries Gets It On With Neutered Companion
(Sexuality vs Sensuality)

Aries and Bronzie

“It’s so weird,” said James, “Aries is neutered and four years old. He’s never acted like a tom cat, and we’ve had him since he was a kitten. Two weeks ago, Bronzie, a neutered kitten, moved in with us, and Aries mounts him? How can Aries be so horny? what’s your take on this?”

“A cat does not lose his sensuality when neutered. Although he can’t sire any kittens, he is still sensual. That would explain why Aries acts out his sensual, sexual feeling,” I explained.
“Must be he has a high testosterone level,” said Susan. “Will this screw Bronzie up? Is there a way to stop it?”

New Kitten Competition
As I shouted his name and threw Aries a toy I gifted, he pounced on it with his whole body.
“That’s an ah ha moment. What a cool reaction! What did you do?” they said.
I smiled and related that Aries felt very special when I called out his name and enthusiastically threw the toy to him. He picked up on my playful energy. Before Bronzie arrived, he had all of your attention when he wanted it. Now Bronzie is front and center, and his kittenish ways push Aries to the side. He becomes an extra to Bronzie’s star billing. As his pent-up energy builds, it’s channeled sexually. His testosterone level peaks, and he carries on with Bronzie.
“So we have to be more interactive and energetic with Aries. But Bronzie usually buts in, and Aries withdraws,” said James.

Bronzie is a non-stop player

Make It All About Aries
I explained that Bronzie could be distracted with a toy thrown his way, while you carry on with Aries. If Bronzie can’t be distracted, toss a toy into another room, and close the door so he can play in private. But do this in a friendly manner so he won’t feel neglected. Now Aries can concentrate on play with no distractions and be the center of attraction. The more Aries releases this energy in play, the less his testosterone levels will be consumed with sexual activity.

Some Additional Tips To Redirect Aries’ Energy

  • Play with them together with two separate toys
  • Sprinkle catnip on their toys and tissue paper
  • Brush daily but stop while there’s a good reaction
  • Be sure to verbally acknowledge Aries whenever you interact with Bronzie so he doesn’t feel rejected. (Refer to #Me Too — A Relationship Maker July 2018 Blog Post)

I told them that Aries’ preferred sexual activity would gradually decline. But I do know of neutered and spayed cats who appear to have consensual sex play on an ongoing basis. With them, this anomaly has become a ritual.
