23 Nov An Intervention For Cindy Lou’s New Relationship
A new kitten introduction can add conundrums for the guardian’s relationship with the adult cat.
An Intervention For Cindy Lou’s New Relationship
(New Kitten Intro, Rivalry)
“I’m happy you could do this intervention for Cindy Lou and Mr. Bates the new kitten,” said Terri. “My daughter filled me in on the winning program you gave for her cats and dog. What a game changer it is— compared to cat intros we’ve had in the past. Anyway, there are a few interactions in their relationship that baffle me, and I wanted your gold seal opinion.
Damsel in Distress
Mr. Bates is a real player, and sometimes Cindy Lou will either hiss or run away when he persists. What should I do?”
I told Terri she should distract Mr. B. with a vigorous toss of a toy but usually best to let them be. A damsel in distress reaction is not unusual for female cats. Cindy is only five years old, not too old to add some kitten camaraderie and interactive play to her m.o.
Mr. Bates And Play Pen Time
“I introduced Mr. B. to Cindy in his play pen. He eats in his play pen and is out and about for intervals when I’m home. “What about when I’m at work?” said Terri. “Would that be over-do?”
“Mr. B. was introduced last month. They’re on the way to a best buds relationship, so now is the perfect time to increase their time together. Start off with short intervals, and within a week you can start to let them hang out together while you’re at work.”
Bedtime Privileges
“Cindy Lou always sleeps with me. What about Mr.Bates?”
I told Terri that if Cindy tolerated Mr. B. in bed, ok. “However,
remember if you interact with him, acknowledge Cindy —so good of you Cindy to invite him to sleep with us. She should have the choice spot.”
“What do you mean?”
I explained that if Cindy slept on her pillow, Mr. B. should sleep
elsewhere — if Cindy felt slighted. Terri should see how it goes
and contact me with any questions.
Cindy Lou Is The Top Cat
As an animated Mr. Bates scampered about and played with the toys I gifted, Cindy Lou kept a low profile. She assumed her voyeur role. It’s not unusual for a kitten to provide continuous entertainment and vicarious pleasure. Kudos for Cindy. She could take what she wanted and ignore the rest. Mr. B. could be the side-bar, her boy toy. Cindy was his role model.
I reminded Terri to be in touch with progress reports and to thank her daughter for the referral.
Terri’s follow up text included a video of buzz worthy progress.
