What’s The Connection With Cats And Nine Lives?

As I sat and brushed a contented Orion who eagerly awaited his dust-busting, my mind wandered to my Apple instructor’s question that afternoon. “Why do they say cats have nine lives?” I was totally woke to his question, because nine has been my lucky number for most of my life.

“A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays, and for the last three he stays”— an old English proverb.

Righting Reflex And Magical Number
Cats usually land on their feet from huge heights, because they have a “righting reflex”— they can twist their body around quickly in the air, so they can land on their feet and survive. This uncanny ability would attribute to why “a cat has nine lives” became a universal expression. 
Nine is also known as a magical number. Cats have been both worshipped and feared throughout the ages for being magical.
