Jackson’s Bully Dog Behavior Can Be A Glitch …
Canine Bliss For Cleo — Except When Jackson Disses her
(Rivalry, New Dog Competition)
Cleo’s relationship with Jackson immediately settled into a forever relationship. She was not feline-companion specific but as in many a relationship, there were times when Jackson dissed Cleo.
Jackson’s Bully Behavior
“Jackson will now and again chase Cleo off the bed—especially if I’m with her, said Kathy. ”Cleo doesn’t get bent out of shape, but I’d like to minimize this behavior.”
I told Kathy to give a sharp “No Jackson” when she sees he’s about to pounce and “Good dog” when he stops. “It’s more about you that he takes on this bully bed behavior. You can tell him that it’s so generous of him to keep Cleo company and protect the two of you while you’re on the bed.”
“I get it,” said Kathy. “This is what you’ve referred to as the ‘rivalry or competitive complex’ and Jackson will sense my positivity.
I nodded and added that Jackson bullies Cleo because he feels left out and out of control. His reaction is to dominate and take control. To chip away at this automatic rivalry, acknowledge Jackson verbally, “Right Jackson,” whenever you interact with Cleo so he feels included. And of course, “Right Cleo ….. “
“…. when I touch or speak with Jackson,” added Kathy. “Okay, I can see that less is not best, so I will make this a must.”
“Yes, Jackson’s #MeToo will become a relationship maker—not breaker.”
The New Normal For Cleo — Jackson’s Walks
Kathy went on to say how Cleo clearly assumed the mama role with Jackson— such indulgence and love. Cleo’s relationship with Jackson included his walks. “She gets that what about me look — although I know she doesn’t want to go along. Or maybe it’s me who’s bummed out.”
“Cleo may feel left out, but it’s also a transitional twist—a major change in activity. Tell Cleo you’ll take Jackson out to give her some private fun — Cleo time. You could give her one of her fave toys (I’m sure she has lots), so when Jackson’s away Cleo can play. Upon return, give her a cheery greeting, and thank her for being so thoughtful and generous.
“So I stockpile Cleo with cheery vibes — instead of dejected ones. Will do, and I’ll remember to stream the link of music you sent to further keep them in sync.”
