How To Get An Emotional Support Animal Letter

There is an emotional support letter for an animal to assist on a flight or to show to a landlord for a person with a disability

— A brown cat stretched out across her lap as the choir began to sing. It was here at this evensong service in London that I met my first emotional support animal. That was several years ago. My most recent experience was at the New York City Ballet where a fuzzy, lap size dog accompanied the gent who sat next to me. Both venues nurtured my well being and I felt gratitude for the presence and service of these extraordinary companions.

If you need an emotional support animal letter when you fly or to show your landlord, there is an accepted procedure.

Tenant Advocacy Program
New York City is very fortunate to have a Tenant Advocacy Program as part of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. They can provide assistance and a sample letter that a doctor or mental health professional might write for a person with a disability who needs a service animal to assist with this disability.

Check out the Alliance’s website to find affordable spay/neuter and general veterinary care, emergency resources, legal resources, various initiatives and other useful information. Whether you’re looking for help or want to help NYC’s animals, you’ll find links to many of the resources you need.
