Companion For Older Cat

  • Q  My Blackie is six years old, and he is my only cat. He’s very affectionate, sleeps with me, is a lap sitter, plays with his toys, no health problems, and he has a cat friendly terrace attached to the living room window which he hangs out on. I adopted him from a shelter, and I was told he was given up because he didn’t get along with the other cat.  Also, he has visits from a neighbor’s dog which he really enjoys. I have allergies which I manage to control with injections. Do you think Blackie’s okay?  All of my cat friends have two cats or more. Some of them feel Blackie is missing out on cat companionship.
  • A  It sounds like Blackie has all that he needs to make him a happy cat. A second cat might set off your allergies, and your discomfort would affect Blackie.  There are some cats that prefer to be solo. It sounds like Blackie is one of these.


Dry Food

  • Q  Is it OK to give my cat dry food?
  • A  It is best to feed your cat premium wet food.  Dry food is OK as a snack.  Add a teaspoon of water to the food.  If your cat vomits or cannot digest wet food, dry food is an option.  You can also try the freeze dried food.


Which Brush To Use

  • Q  Can you recommend a good brush??
  • A  The steam cat brush is very handy as it’s easy to remove the fur from the brush. Here’s one to try.


Probiotics

  • Q  Can I give my cat a feline probiotic?
  • A  Yes, it’s good for her health, and most cats like it. It’s especially good for adult cats.

 

Purring At The Vet

  • Q  Why does my cat purr when he goes to the vet?  I know he isn’t happy to be there.
  • A  It’s not unusual for a cat to purr when afraid or unhappy. What happens is that the energy builds up and the vibration causes the purr to chime in.
