Bedtime Static
Q Why does my cat kvetch when I go to bed at night?
A Sounds like he feels deserted, and dramatically lets you know loud and clear. You might suggest he join you in bed or take a little time to stroke and talk to him before you tuck in. Let him feel included rather than left out.
High-Rise Syndrome
Q Our Cats, Piper and Tucket often play out on our sun-deck. We live on the second floor. Could they get hurt if they fell or would they land on their feet?
A Generally, if a fall is below the fifth floor, a cat would be injured. There would not be time enough for him to flip over and land on his feet. Above the fifth floor, this flip would be possible. Also, a cat’s depth perception is poor, and one step too many can be catastrophic.
Foodie Oral Fixation
Q Why does my cat eat almost anything he can get his mouth on?
A Your foodie might eat out of anxiety. He stuffs the uncomfortable feeling with food. To ease his oral fixation, you might add yeast and wheat germ to his food—about 1/4 teaspoon each, and mix in well. This is good for stress relief. Give him extra attention, and distract him when he starts to “binge”. You might adopt a companion for him if he’s your only cat. He may be a victim of the single cat syndrome. The happier and more relaxed he feels, the less inclined he’ll be to fill his mouth.
