Does My Newly Adopted Cat Need A Companion? (July2024)

There are some cats who do well as a single cat.

*Does My Five-Year-Old Newly Adopted Cat Need A Companion?
(Single Cat Syndrome)
“Do you think Sparky needs a companion?” said Susan. “I don’t want him to be affected by the single cat syndrome that you write about.” …..

Sparky takes time out

“Symptoms are usually aggressive behavior, destruction to furnishings, withdrawal and other repetitive un-cat-like behavior, “ I said.
“Not my Sparky,” said Susan. “He’s my boy!”  With that, she tossed him a toy, and he took off.

Sparky’s Play List
“He’s quite a player,” I said.
“Yeah, it’s only been a week since I adopted Sparky. Although he seems to like it when I join in, he doesn’t seek my interaction. He really digs his claws into the cork and cedar scratching posts you recommended. The sisal post should arrive by tomorrow.”
I reminded Susan to praise and acknowledge him whenever he uses his “scratch enablers” and to shout and startle him if and when he didn’t.
“Susan, We’ll leave the door open for another rescue adoption. Give me a Sparky report in about a week. I don’t want to overlook any of Sparky’s cues.”

Sparky’s Appetizer
A few days later I received the following text from Susan:
When I told you that Sparky was a dry food fan, you suggested I sprinkle it over his soft food as an appetizer. It’s a go! Really gets his juices going. He carefully cleans his plate. We thank you.
